Hi bob,

I lost data from that first trip to Tucson and back but I do remember the what the cost would have been if I would have had to pay for electrons. Roughly $145 vs the gas cost of about $417.

A year later we did the same trip to Tucson but also picked up Mike and did a two day trip up to Winslow, AZ then to the Grand Canyon and Prescott then back to Tucson before backtracking back home to Seattle.

Roughly 4400 miles covered in 8 days.

I'll never forget Fred not believing me that we could make it to Tucson on the first trip. By the time we had made it almost all the way south driving thru Oregon he had to admit that his doubts were erased.

It's all about determining when to pull the plug and just move down the road to achieve the best VMG (Velocity Made Good). Charge rate tapers fast as the battery pack is filling up at high charge rates (think cell temps).

We learned very quickly not to charge beyond about 75 to 80% capacity. With many software updates the last few years all Tesla's have optimized "trip planning" on the go. We can even see how many Tesla's are charging at Superchargers in real time. Something that did not exist four years ago.

Way too many improvements to mention. I have a hard time keeping up with all the updates!

Of course newer Tesla's charge even faster.

I charge at home with a PV array. No utility needed.
