Typically, from what I understand there are only 2 employees on any given freight train. A conductor and an engineer. As far as I know they both could have been on the same end of the train.

Not saying that's a good idea.

The axle/bearing that caused the fire was supposedly seen by John Q afire 30 minutes before the derailment.
