[wingate, LAN to internet]
zeuspaul, you can use the 'gatekeeper' to start or stop the wingate service. if you work under wein95 its a bit irritating to have wingate running as a 'service', you wont 'see' any icon or so, that indicates a running 'wingate' service. on the other hand, it doesnt matter whether wingate is running in the background or not while you are experimenting/struggling with your configuration.

my advice to install wingate properly is:

1. make your network running with only the tcp/ip protocol installed

2. install/run wingate on your wingate machine and make the proper installation on your client (read the installation manual carefully)
3. try out wingate using a web browser on your client, this is the most simple way (dont spend too much time with all that 'tcp/IP wingate mapping' stuff )

it is very important for wingate that you should have setup your tcp/ip network properly. so, test it with only the 'tcp/ip' protocoll running (no NetBeui or IPx/spx) before you start with wingate.attach IP adresses/subnet masks to your computers. if you want, create a host file on both your wingate and client machine so that you can adress your computers by names instead of IP numbers.

There is avery good article about 'connecting a Lan to the Internet'
carol.wins.uva.nl

it gives you a nice overview of

routing,
network address translation
modem sharing
IP Masquerading
sharing a connection to the Internet
software router
proxy server
