Drug companies do things for doctors to help them remember their product - gifts with the drug's name on it such as pens, note pads, etc. are typical and acceptable to the AMA and the Pharmaceutical Manufacturers Association. Bringing in a speaker to the hospital and paying for donuts, coffee, etc. is slightly more problematic. Paying a physician's travel, hotel and registration expenses to go to a conference where the drug is going to be mentioned favorably by at least one speaker, especially when the conference is held in some exotic location, is considered unacceptable by many. MedImmune has begun the latter practice, although so far, only at decidedly unexotic locations such as Chicago.
