Well, it’s been an interesting week. Not necessarily bad, maybe even good for the contestants, but certainly interesting. I suspect things are less positive over at the report for the Financial Values Charity Stock Picking Contest.

Anyway, the NASDAQ composite, up +4.4%, thought it was a pretty good one. Less so, but still positive, for the two biotech indices we follow here (+2.2% and +1.1%), which was still not enough YTD to erase the pummeling they took last week, so both are still in the red (-$5.6k, -$8.3k).

The top performing stock for the week was PRVB with an explosive pop of +160% of its starting price, and with a real, hard, reason: They are being purchased by Sanofi for $25 a share, the sale to close sometime this quarter. This puts PRVB into 4th place YTD. It is worth noting that PRVB was one of the few bright lights of last years contest, returning +88% in 2022. JSPR continues to bounce around, this week's return of +29% partially compensating for last week’s loss, -39%.

This week’s big looser was BLCM, dropping -75% after announcing on Tuesday it was discontinuing its Phase 1/2 trials of their CAR-T technology products, anther the are initiating the “Evaluation of Strategic Alternatives”. Then on Friday it announced the complete termination of any further development of their pipeline candidates. The YTD top 5 winners are unchanged other than the already remarked on newcomer PRVB.

The contest portfolios had a pretty good week as well: all but two in the black, with a median gain of $2.2k. Welcome as it is, it still leaves six portfolios in the red YTD, mostly due to last week’s punishing drops. Perhaps coincidentally, the median portfolios for recent and YTD performance were held by the same contestants last week, BULBAMAN and TECHNETIUM respectively.

The best performing portfolio for the week was ALONER, up +$18.5k, thanks to being the sole portfolio with a position in PRVB, the only contest portfolio that outperformed the NASDAQ Composite. TECHNETIUM turned in the second best return for the week, for the second week in a row, +$4.8k. When you look at ALONER’s portfolio you can see that besides PRVB (4th stock YTD) they have also positions in CDTX (3rd) and MGTA (5th), giving a them a strong second place YTD return (+$36k). A $15.7k difference in the weekly performance between themselves and our current YTD champion, BLADERUNNER, chewed up a big chunk of their YTD separation, now only $27k.
