I have put together a little primer for your visit to Newfoundland

Watch the movie The Rowdyman, the breakout role for the 'Pope of Newfoundland', Gordon Pinsent.

Watch the movie Seducing Dr. Lewis, about a small town in Newfoundland trying to get a doctor to stay. Newfoundlanders kind of play a role to outsiders at times, so this charming movie about a small town putting itself on display has an extra layer if you know to look for it.

And the TV series Republic of Doyle gives a good introduction to the kind of characters you'll run across.

I wish I could direct you yo watch Codco, the most influential North American comedy series ever, but, criminally, it is not available (sob...)

Read the book The Colony of Unrequited Dreams by Wayne Johnson. It's about Newfoundland joining Canada and is truly a masterpiece. I wish I still had the eyesight to read it again, for maybe the 4th time.

Here's a good list of literature set in Newfoundland. I read, I think four of them before my eyes gave out, and enjoyed them all. (Besides Colony, I endorse The Shipping News, Sweetland, and February.)

For music, check out Buddy Wasisname and the Other Fellers for a good introduction to the local music.

Great Big Sea gives you a more modern take on Newfoundland music. (Typical for this small place, the lead singer is the lead actor in Republic of Doyle.)

And finally a piece of advice about making conversation with Canadian strangers which applies even more to Newfoundlanders. We love to talk about the weather!
