It's been how many years since this first made the headlines? Six? Seven? Back then, no one really told me exactly what made this payment illegal, and no one has told me now.

Did Trump use campaign funds or other funds that are legally barred from buying someone's silence? If so, does violating these laws amount to a felony that should be punished by jail time?

Also, what does this say about the legality of hush money payments in general? Aren't such payments common?
