It would be quite damaging to Trump if he told his attorney Corcoran that there were documents that couldn't be returned to the US government, bc they are in the hands of a third party.

The classified documents are not finite objects that Trump stole and refused to return. It's the information on them that is critical. He probably had them copied, transcribed, viewed or photographed before he sold or shared the information on them with third parties.

Perhaps Evan Corcoran realized that the Trump espionage crimes in progress were too risky for him to personally be a part of and he reported these crimes to the DOJ. Thus the urgent appeals schedule of midnight and 6 am on whether he must testify & tell Smith everything he knows
