People ( and nations) have different definitions of what free trade is all about. Free trade from a pure capitalist ideology and free trade from a centralized planning, authoritative government that mixes in capitalism to suit itself are two different things. To expect China to conform to US standards of free trade is foolhardy at best. Playing hardball backfires most of the time. A more pragmatic approach would likely have worked much better; it certainly would not have produced worse results.
