...An elite group of Russian programmers have done what Bill Gates and Microsoft said would not be possible for another five years: Typhoon Software, of Santa Barbara, Calif., and St. Petersburg, Russia, released a new product that completely speech-enables Microsoft Word97. The surprising, professional-quality software allows Word97 users to dictate directly into the program, and to edit and control menus by voice. Typhoon's product, SpokenWord, uses the IBM ViaVoice speech engine, but Typhoon improved upon IBM's basic product using the talents of Russian programming wizards. Typhoon Software has a unique three-way joint venture with IBM and Novell to develop and market speech-recognition products. IBM provides the speech engine, Novell offers its Speech Recognition API (SRAPI) technology, and Typhoon ties it all together to activate speech within major applications, such as Microsoft Word97, Corel WordPerfect 8 and Novell GroupWise.
