It's safe to assume this type of surveillance is common in authoritarian regimes including the Middle East. The problem is as it creeps into so-called free western countries, which it has already at local levels.

We likely are rhymes-with-pucked on a national level. Edward Snowden was a decade ago already. Whatever you think of him and or his tactics, just imagine how much better that technology is now. As politics gets more tribal and some choose to weaponize elements of the administrative and surveillance state against perceived political enemies.
