I have curly hair. The wrong kind of barber always soaks my hair to straighten it out to cut because they don't know how to cut curly hair. They always end up cutting too much (and styling poorly) because (1) hair lengthens when wet, then shrinks, and (2) they mess up the cut b/c they don't understand that curly hair needs to be longer than they expect or it will stick up. It needs the weight of its ends to pull it down.

Anyways, my conclusion after many years of experimentation with many barbers has been to choose a barber who has a similar hair as I. That mostly means Italians, but sometimes also hispanics. When that is not possible, I instruct the barber to only pretend to cut my hair but in reality only touch the tips ;) Above all, I must stay away from Chinese barbers.

And yes, this means that despite my moniker, I am not Chinese...the secret is out ;)
