Bill -

Doesn't it seem odd to you that this issue is considered - at most - a nuisance by most of the industry.

Maintenance is always considered a dirty word. Everyone knows that buying the hottest new technology will painlessly wipe out the sloppy work of the past 5 decades... only it never quite works that way.

Don't believe every estimate you hear.

I certainly don't believe the guesstimates... all I know from my direct personal coding experience is that working on big projects is slow, error prone work. Then I factor in my experience of attempting to sell software maintenance tools to the Fortune 1000... maintenance is simply something that the vast majority of companies don't want to know about... therefore it's done poorly.

that most "remediation" efforts of legacy code is progressing nicely - and at far lower cost than anticipated?

That's not how I read the tea leaves.

I know we'll just have to agree to disagree... until the fit hits the shan. <g>
