It goes all the way back to Bush and the Neocons who got us in there in the first place
Thank God he did.

As a result, we took out Osama bin Laden and Al Qaeda.

Also as a result, the Taliban who harbored the terrorists were driven out and forced to hide in caves for two decades.

All thanks to the Bush Doctrine: "We make no distinction between the terrorists and those who harbor them."

Unfortunately, we also got caught up in nation-building. That part didn't work out too well.
