McNealy: Netscape rumors a joke By Dawn Yoshitake Staff Writer, CNET NEWS.COM February 13, 1998, 8:25 a.m. PT SANTA CLARA, California--With rumors circulating that Sun Microsystems (SUNW) may be interested in acquiring Netscape (NSCP), the top dog at Sun touched on the issue at a speaking engagement last night here at a Churchill Club dinner in Silicon Valley. It may not have answered the crucial question, but it made for good show. Playing off the flack over an Olympics gold medalist snow boarder claiming he tested positive for marijuana because of second-hand smoke, Sun's CEO and stand-up comic Scott McNealy offered up his infamous top ten list: The top ten computer industry situations caused by second-hand marijuana smoke: No. 10--Sun considers...buying Apple. No. 9--Sun considers buying Netscape. No. 8--Compaq does buy DEC. No. 7--Let's call that product "Bob." No. 6--Let's call our sons Maverick and Dakota. No. 5--We only need two digits in the date field. No. 4--Windows 95. No. 3--I said I wanted Adobe, not a doobie. No. 2--Windows won't work without the browser Explorer, your honor. No. 1--Java is just a programming language. But when pressed for a serious response on the matter, McNealy responded: "I can't comment on rumors, no matter how accurate or silly they will be."
