It all began with the rewrite of The Hardy Boys. Words like 'flivver' and 'roadster' were removed. It wasn't just outdated words, the whole writing style was dumbed down. For example, in the original, the introduction of Aunt Gertrude went on for almost two pages. We were given a vivid description of how she exited the taxi, how she admonished the driver for some oversight, brandishing her umbrella at him. Then walking noisily from the taxi to the front door in a state of great indignation, all the while describing her goofy attire.

The rewrite takes about a paragraph to introduce her, with no colorful language.
