Your quote is of course spot on. And at some point we will know if the "spoils" of this war are the destruction of the Ukrainian fascist groups, the demilitarization of Ukraine, and its neutral status vis-a-vis NATO.

In 2014 Russia's intention was to negotiate an end to Ukrainian military assault on the Donbas. The leaders of France and Germany at the time, Hollande and Merkel, held talks with Putin and reached an agreement to cease those hostilities. They admitted late last year that they had no intention of honoring the agreement. They said that the negotiations to end hostilities against the Donbas were a ruse to buy more time for NATO to bring core units of Ukraine Army up to their standards.

As the Azov battalion assault on Donbas continued the Russians decided that an invasion was necessary around late 2021. The invasion force of 200,000 was relatively small but the Russians believed it would convince Zelensky to bring an end to the attacks on the Donbas.
