What really struck me was how both soldiers and their wives seemed almost resigned to their fates.

You know which country is also full of citizens that seem utterly resigned to their fate? North Korea.

Spiritual deadness, political apathy, lack of will to resist, and fatalism all characterize both RuZZians and North Koreans.
