Seven years of wrong policy implementation has done its damage. I don't think the USA has much credibility left, from what I hear on the news. It looks to me as though Saddam will only grow stronger now.

The oil production quota imposed on Iraq by the UN is being greatly increased, helping to drop energy prices. This political weakness has been caused by widespread pity of the Iraqi people and by our own double standards. Instead of hurting the Saddam regime with our quota, we hurt the people who should be our allies in this situation.

Even if the US government changes its policy 180 degrees and decides to use the Iraqi opposition as a tool to eliminate Saddam, will it work or will the Iraqi opposition use other political means for its purposes? The Shiites in the south are the same religion as the Iranians and there is a Kurdish faction also aligned with Iran. Our government has increasingly isolated itself in the region and Saddam knows it as well as everybody else.

Once again we can use our advanced technology to damage Saddam's ability to fight, but if it results in the same incomprehensible stalemate as before, where will it leave us? And the point you touched on, suppose if we attack Iraq again, the North Koreans attack South Korea and Iran, Syria, and other Arab countries support Iraq militarily, how will we play that game? The Russians and Red Chinese are looking for ways to increase their foreign power at our expense and this Iraqi mess is the perfect lever.
