Canadian regulators nail 'desert dirt' promoter

Not to be outdone by Bre-X Minerals' claim to have 70.9 million oz. gold at the Busang property in Indonesia, American Technology exploration told potential investors last year that it had 76 million oz. of contained gold in "blocked out reserves" at its property in Nevada.

The British Columbia Securities Commission (BSCS) responded by filing a notice of hearing against the company and two of its directors, Philip Lieberman and his son Marc. At the time, regulators pointed out that the elder Lieberman had failed to comply with two previous orders imposed against him for breaches of securities regulations, including one for making "false and misleading representations" in disclosure documents.

In late January of this year, the BCSC imposed on Philip Lieberman a lifetime ban from securities trading and from being a director or officer of a company. It also fined him $50,000 and imposed similar bans, for five years, on Marc Lieberman. A cease-trade order was imposed on the company.

The Liebermans are reported to have made many misrepresentations about the Nevada property on the World Wide Web.
