WHY MICROSOFT IS VULNERABLE herring.com

Well, since you sent me off after this Red Herring thing, J.P., I'll throw a different article from that source back at you.

In summary, one can see that Microsoft has proceeded in Round 3 much as it did in Rounds 1 and 2. That is, buying or copying platforms and applications that other vendors have made popular, and aggressively bullying and driving them into the market. The difference is that the success Microsoft had in the OS and PC applications markets has been more graceful than its attempts at Internet software and services.

Let us close with a question for our readers. Can you imagine a day when Windows NT takes over corporate America, when the majority of Internet surfers use Internet Explorer, when those surfers' favorite online service is MSN, when the next PC platform is built on J/Direct, and when our grandmothers are ordering pizzas over their proprietary WebTV sets?

Neither can we.

I don't know who the "we" is there, there are plenty of people around here telling me that the above world is both desirable and inevitable. I'm guilty of taking the vision too seriously at times, I admit. It's an Andy Grove thing.

Cheers, Dan.
