| | | And so we close out April, and the first third of the year. The NASDAQ Composite “portfolio" added another +$1.5k, this week, putting the total return at +$16.8k for the first third of the contest year. Biotech’s generally did not share this joy, both of composite indices dropping -2% for the week, putting the NASDAQ biotech index back in the red, YTD (-$0.6k), not quite as bad as its companion, the S&P Biotech index, which is -$3.8k in the red for the year to date.
Some individual stocks could claim a good, if not spectacular, week, EYEN added +26% of its initial price, on no particular news. TGTX added +23% to its strong performance during the first three weeks of April. It has an earnings announcement this coming Monday. Maybe somebody knows something. The rest of the top performers, CABA, CRDF, and URGN, also had no news in the Yahoo! feeds to explain their good week.
More consequential movements were for this weeks worst (TCON, -66%), and second worst (INZY, -62%). Almost all of TCON’s lose was on Tuesday when they released a press release saying that they had won a dispute with a (now former) collaborator that had been in arbitration, with an award of $9 million, plus legal fees. Not clear why this “good news” was interpreted by the market as a signal to sell, perhaps expecting a larger award. In INZY’s case it might just have been some profit taking after a stupendous month, remaining as the top YTD performer (+425%) by a healthy margin compared to second place EYEN (+226%).
It was a poor week for the contest portfolios, dropping -$2.6k on average. Even so, both the average and median portfolio have had a solid return of more than +$11k so far in the contest, much better than either of the biotech indices. When we look at the individual portfolios, six managed a positive return for the week. The best, BLADERUNNER, earned $4k$ from this week’s returns from a 20% investment CRDF (the 4th place stock for the week) and 15% in CRIS, overcoming the continuing slide in their top pick JSPR. This allowed them to reclaim their position as number one in YTD performance from ALONER. ALONER’s weekly return was a decent gain of +$1.1k, for fourth place. Interestingly, the positive performance of both portfolios is because of their holdings in CRDF and CRIS. The difference in profits was because ALONER only had 10% positions in both stocks. ARTHUR RADLEY owes his second place return for the week due to his 20% bet on EYEN.
