Matt,

On level 2, if someone is right on the bid, they are buying. If someone is right on the ask, they are selling. If they are wide of both, they are not active (time of sale will confirm this). If they are wide of one (say, way high on the ask), then the MM just isn't worried about selling (or buying, as the case may be), so she/he has pushed it up out of the way (this answers your Monty question).

I follow GSCO because I'm told that the SOES traders follow GSCO closely. As Pete Broker said, the SOES people "never trade against GSCO." (Pete, correct me if I'm wrong).

I follow INCA and ISLD because this is largely institutional trading.
