Actually, I prefer tamari sauce, which unlike soy sauce, is actually made from soybeans

Soy sauce' is made from wheat.

When I make the recipes myself I can avoid the fish sauce but it is really hard to avoid if you go to a Thai or Vietnamese restaurants, of which there are a plethora here in Vancouver.

My sister is a gourmet-level Thai cook so I have been lucky to have a few feasts she made that were actually vegetarian. Amazing!
