Not a bad article but it’s missing context in terms of the German / EU political landscape and thus places too much blame on Merkel instead of spreading the blame more evenly to the EU, NATO and more specifically to the German coalition governments during Merkel’s time in power. Looking at it objectively, it wasn’t just Merkel who “encouraged” Putin. It was a miscalculation by the “West” dating back to at least 2008.
