As long as it all works for you, that's awesome. ATT is generally considered the worst in almost any zip code except for a few urban areas and has been for many years. The T-Mobile network has mostly caught up to the Verizon network in many but not all rural areas and otherwise made leaps in the suburbs. Sadly they don't have a huge overlap of bands used and unless you buy a more expensive phone and the Verizon branded in particular generally aren't as good for international travel compared to T-Mobile and ATT branded phones. That's why I switched to unlocked with the most band receivers built in for Asia and Europe for most of my international phones.

This has gotten a bit better with e-sims. Also in most locations you can buy relatively cheap unlimited daily, weekly, or monthly data plans and with all of the voice and messaging apps you hardly use traditional cell towers unless you are out in the sticks, much like the USA.

The nicest cheap phones are a great value. When traveling to certain countries I always try to bring one or two extra NIB to gift or sell well below my cost because inevitably one of my old friends will have a failing jalopy-of-a-phone or make a new friend and it's beneficial to pay it forward to keep the conversation going after I depart.

There are cheap case and screen protectors for phones of any cost but if you don't live on your phone, and I mostly don't, then there's no reason to opt in and buy the flagship models. I understand why some people do and just choose to spend my money elsewhere, and also don't seem to drop my phones as often as you are. To each his own.
