At the Battle of Hastings 1066, Norman Invasion of Britain, William and Normans were at a disadvantage at the bottom of a hill. Anglo Saxon King Harold were at the top of the hill with woods on both sides.

Saxons did well for most of the day, slaughtering many Normans using shield wall tactics against better armed Normans who had more archers and cavalry plus infantry. The battle look hopeless for the Normans.

Continental battle experienced William had several tricks up his sleeve. His main one was to arrange another frontal attack but for the troops to engage lightly, fain panic, and "retreat in disarray" and keep running.

Anglo Saxons thinking the hard battle engaged so far, meant they won and the Normans had thrown in the towel perhaps? They chased the Normans down the hill thinking it was all over. This left a big gap at the top of the hill, which the Normans exploited and took over. Now at the top of the hill, more numerous, and better with arms plus cavalry they quickly defeated the remaining troops at the top of the hill, and killed Harold the King.

Game over. Normans win, changing things somewhat.
