The closing words of last week’s reports were: “Let’s hope for better times next week.” Alas, it was a perfectly “Alexander” kind of week, as in “Terrible, Horrible, No good, Very Bad” week. Pretty weak for the general market (NASDAQ Composite off -1.4%), biotech indices were a bit worse, dropping -2.1% and -2.6%. And for the contest portfolios, well…

Let’s back up and look at the individual shares first. This week’s top five “big” winners this week run from +12% to +6%, quite a bit lower than the weeks where the big movers could be up +60% and more, and even a comedown from last weeks top five: +37% to +18%. At least number one for the week, BCDA, could hang it’s +12% performance on “news”, even if the news is only that the FDA has completed its review of the statistical analysis plan they are proposing for an upcoming trial. They don’t even mention whether the FDA has approved the plan. Glancing over at the worst performers for the week, at least this time it’s not overwhelmingly dominated by the YTD top five, although JSPR (still number 2 YTD, +160%), is there at the number four worst spot, down -23% (of it’s original price at the start of the contest). If you recall previous week’s reports involving JSPR, you can probably guess that this isn’t going to a good week for JSPR holder BLADERUNNER.

When you look at the portfolio details is when you see just how bad a week it has been. Last week the median portfolio was -$6.4k in the red, which sliced off about 64% from their YTD winnings, down to +$3.8k, barely keeping their head above water for the year. But looking at the “Top Recent Performers,” it’s clear that the bad news was pretty universal. Every portfolio was in the red. Even the best performer for the week, RKRW, took a -$2.3k hit. An initial 10% buy of 3rd place PHAT on his part probably made a difference between first and fifth or so. Even so, his YTD fourth place is unchanged from the previous week. ERIKOTTO, in fourth for the week (only dropping -$4.1k), was enough to move him from fifth to sixth for the YTD standings.

Even if the order of the top four is unchanged, second place YTD BLADERUNNER dropped further behind number one ALONER, the two now separated by $12k.

I won’t say anything about next week. Not worth the risk.

I continue as the median, if not the bellwether, at least the weather vane indicating which way the wind blows.
