Allan,,I have NEVER had a problem shorting at Datek. Even the highly shorted stocks seem to be always available. Perhaps its partly due to the fact that many daytraders or short postion traders use Datek, and thus there is always new stock become available. Who knows why, but it is nice to know that you can always take the postion you desire.
