Reseller,

How long have you been building custom computers? I have built many and the problem you reported could happen between to different hard drives. For instance, I have experienced problems between Maxtor and Western Digital drives where they had to be placed on separate IDE interfaces because they both would not work together on the same IDE interface. Or in some cases, one had to be the master and would not operate as a slave. I just move them into a configuration that works. Some IDE devices just will not work with others on the same interface.

I'm not disputing your observation of the SPARQ, just pointing out it can happen with other IDE devices from different manufacturers as well.
