There's an old poli math theorem I just made up which says "equal treatment + equal rights = equal outcomes."
That's wrong on so many levels. It's why I will never be a (big-L) liberal.

Everyone believes in equal opportunity, equal rights, and equal treatment.

But equal outcomes is impossible. Outcome is a function of choices, chances, and circumstances.

No two people make the same choices in life.

Chance will never affect two people identically.

And no two people will come from the exact same circumstances. Not even identical twins.

Given this reality, the focus on equal outcomes necessarily leads to special treatment (i.e. unequal treatment) in order to make up for what is perceived to be "unfair disadvantages."
