Alan,

I think that you have to consider the sector that your investing in. If your buying Berkshire Hathaway, buy it for the long term, but if your in small cap high techs try to by good ones and let them run but be ready to pull the trigger on them when the sector goes down. What I have done in the past is place a stop loss limit on them at about 60% of my gain once I have a gain of 25% or more. In that way I am provided with some degree of protection if the sector tanks. Since I have a tendency to utilize a fair degree of leverage, it helps my wife sleep better at night.
