As mentioned in the previous report, the Fourth of July holiday on Tuesday, restricted the US markets to only 3 and a half days of trading. And as you might expect it was quiet week, pretty much like the previous three weeks. Which is to say another poor week for the broader market and biotechs generally, and a worse one for the contest portfolios. The biotech indices underperformed the NASDAQ composite, with all three in the red for the week.

Turning to individual stocks, CRBU made a significant jump for the week, +48% of its price at the start of the contest, on the news that Pfizer is making a $25 million equity investment in it. CRVS showed a return of +35% for the week, while publishing preclinical data demonstrating how a treatment under development was able to enhance the efficacy of cancer killing T cells. This boosted its YTD return to +200%, returning it to second place in the YTD performance.

On the minus side, the best YTD stock, INZY, lost -28%, but this was pocket change compared to earlier gains, as this still leaves it with a YTD return of +400%. PTE’s loss of -26% was spread over several weeks, as YAHOO stopped updating its price four weeks ago. The was because it had a not widely announced change of trading symbol to PTEIQ after its delisting from NASDAQ due in part to a current price of 7 cents a share, giving it the third worst performance YTD (-89%) for any of the portfolios' choices. This week I entered the closing price of PTEIQ by hand in place of the frozen value for PTE, but next week I will update our YAHOO databases, (and the contest portfolios that selected it) to use the pink sheet trading symbol.

The contestants as a whole just continued on their recent trajectory, down. The average portfolio shed -$1.4k, the same as the previous week. The Median YTD portfolio dropped from -$0.9k to -$5.4k. Like last week, only four portfolios were in the black, though the best for the week, RAJU_BIJLEE (+$1.1k) is eclipsed by last week’s fourth place finisher A.J. MULLEN (+$2.2k). An examination of RAJU_BIJLEE’s portfolio choices shows that they owe their first place finish to having no big winners for the week, but also no big losers. In contrast ALONER’s fourth place return for the week (+$220) can only be attributed to their 10% allocation to CRVS (2nd place stock for the week), though the +$4.2k it contributed was almost completely wiped out by the losses returned by every other of their choices.

Still it was enough for ALONER to add another $550 to the separation between their YTD portfolio performance and second place BLADERUNNER. The relative rankings of all the top finishers is unchanged from last week, bar TECHNETIUM’s entry into seventh place from ninth, a result not of a good or indifferent week (a twelfth place return for the week), but just managing to be not as bad as two portfolios ahead of them in the standings.

Tune in next week...
