Hi Bob, can only speak for myself but, if given a choice between SMH or SOXL on a longer term basis then I'd have to choose SMH for several reasons. And if more choices available I might opt out altogether.

SOXL held for more than a few days requires not just getting the trend timing right but also the volatility function as you saw in that attached graph, or it can be punishing to hold.

I trade ES and NQ index futures which inherently have leverage and exposure to the larger SOX names. Also sometimes trade, and hold, the underlying stocks of the larger SOX components. For me SOXL solves a problem that doesn't exist but I understand why others might like it. To each his own. FWIW.
