| | | Bill, I think he's a genius. An evil genius. There is nothing that he's doing which suggests any level of "genius." All he's doing is playing the Chinese nationalism card in an effort to cement China's status as the next superpower.
The investments he's making into Chinese ghost cities, the Belt and Road initiatives, the military spending and saber-rattling WRT Taiwan, and the blatant cultural appropriation, is nothing new under the sun. Plus the positive effects they're having on China's soft power is a lot less than what the media is hyping it up to be.
Even all the money he's spending into new technologies like A.I., quantum computing, and renewable energy isn't aimed toward innovation. Instead, it's all reminds me of the NIH (Not Invented Here) mentality that I've seen at IBM, Intel, Microsoft, etc. Been there, done that, samo samo.
Finally, the way they dealt with the COVID-19 pandemic was nothing short of oppressive incompetence. They clearly prioritized covering their collective asses over working with the global community in dealing with and later overcoming the pandemic.
Even later, they continued their lockdowns because they chose to err on the side of brutal authoritarianism than joining the rest of the world in getting over the pandemic.
No matter what, Xi Jinping is nothing but a megalomaniac. That's not "genius." That's hubris.

P.S. - China still has a lot of entrepreneurial spirit. They can truly be great if they moved more toward (small-L) liberal capitalism. |
