I predict that once Autonomous starts selling its lasers in U.S. by 1999, they will target Summit owners with their modest up-front purchase fee and per-use payments. This will lead to more trade-in's of Summit machines (similar scenario when other lasers are approved for sale by 1999).

Summit owners will jump at the offer to get a marketing and "outcomes" advantage over Visx owners.

This may only be a problem for Summit if FTC breaks up PPP, forcing Summit to collect royalties only on its machines. Visx, however, which has already signed international licenses with Autonomous, may not have this problem, as it will license Autonomous in U.S. if PPP is dissolved, and thus collect royalties on Autonomous procedures.

You heard it here first.
