Brumar, this is an example of a "study" that makes false or invalid comparisons just for the purpose of headlines.

Kids of alumni are typically from much better backgrounds and are much more likely to study harder and be groomed for the rigors of higher education.

A better comparison would be to take two applicants to Columbia, one of whom whose parents are also from Columbia, and the other whose parents are from, say, Cornell, U.Penn, or Stanford. (Note that I said Columbia, not Harvard, since Harvard is incredibly elitist and will probably favor legacy more than any other school out there.)
