Modern times: Even as he learns much by playing computer games with his buddies, he had to earn by getting the grades so he can buy the computer components to assemble his own computer as I noted to him at the outset, “you want to play on a top of the line windows computer you shall have to assemble your own”.
Grandson Hayes did likewise = learned all about the requirements, bought the components and made his own fancy war gaming machinery. In my time, I learned about carburetor float chambers, wearing needles that the float shut, valve timing, shovel wielding, nail hammering, wood working, horse shoes, rotary slide rules, 7 figure log tables, pounds shillings and pence, imperial weights and measures, and a lot more besides.
I guess that the hordes of young males will be good remote pilots for autonomous cars that need a bit of management through tricky situations that bamboozle the "intelligent" on-board system. Also for aircraft as remote pilots as backup to whatever is on-board [coronal mass ejections could be problematic at times].
Some people can't help but work. Your Coconut is one of those people it seems from afar. When the work has large components of enjoyment, the "work" aspect is diluted. Plenty of jobs are pretty much solid work and the clock gets punched as soon as possible. Fortunately for me, much of my work was more enjoyment than work.
