He thought he couldn't immediately because of political realities. Too many people thought like you ... that abolitionism was radical.
It's those "political realities" that made abolitionism radical at the time.

Being an "abolitionist" at heart is like being against abortion at heart but pro-choice in reality. It meant nothing to those who were still slaves at the time.

Those realities aren't something you can so easily dismiss with your oh-so-idealistic view of the world. Heck, the whole issue of slavery led to the bloodiest fuckin' war in all of American history, more so than even WWII.

So yeah, the issue of slavery IS complex, more so than what you would like to believe.
