Abotlitionism wasn't radical and it led to actual abolition of slavery.
It was too radical a concept to be applied politically. That's the point. It took the bloodiest war in all of American history to abolish slavery.

(And if you thought the Civil War was bloody, imagine if the handheld machine gun was invented before then.)
