If it comes down to Pence's word versus Trump's, the country will go with Pence.
I don't know about the whole country, since plenty of people on both sides of the political chasm hate Pence's guts.

As for me personally, I'll take Pence's word over Trump's. But then again, I'd take the word of a used car salesman over Trump's.
