Hi Thomas,

I won't be around much in the next few weeks, so don't get discouraged
if you don't get an answer right away.

I have seen the rumors in the press and I have heard a number of
other ones that came out of ComNet that did not make the press
involving NT. I won't repeat any of the other ones as I have not
been able to verify any of them. If any of them are true, that
information is not filtering out of the upper management to the
working engineers,

In general I tend not to give too much wieght to rumours. They
should not effect your descision to enter or exit a trade.
Concentrate on the fundamentals, if the rumors are true it is
a bonus, but don't buy a stock based on a buy out rumor.
They are often wrong, though if your timing is right on exit
and entry you can get a few points as people buy on the
rumor and sell on the news. Get the timing right on rumours
is difficult though.

As for NT's and LU's desire to acquire data network technology,
the short answer is they are both looking to expand their
presence in this area. If you listened to the CSCO conference
call, you would have heard Chambers mention that both
NT and LU have 3 billion dollars in sales annual in networking
products and the CSCO is aggressively looking to form an
alliance with both of these companies. The reality is that
RBOC's prefer to deal with telecommunications companies not
networking companies. Convergence between networking
and telecommunications is coming.

NT recently formed a data communication division. The new head
of the division has stated he is willing to buy technology where
appropriate and form partnerships as needed. CS has a relationship
with NT already. NT's is trying to get the ISP business too, Their
new 1 megabit modems due this Christmas will make them a
player in this space. They are number one in the enterprise
ATM WAN space.

LU wants to aggressively be in the networking area too as the growth
rates of the demand for products is high. They are essential
prevented from making a big merger or buyout till October
as they are prohibited from making a pooling of interest deal
till that time as far as I know. That was one of the terms of the
spin off of LU from T.
