Resentment of foreign influences, some of which is justified; an exceedingly powerful single party synonymous (and constitutionally aligned) with the State; a single man who becomes the epicenter of political life; a well-developed and overwhelming internal security apparatus; xenophobia; the rapid development of military power; the integration and coordination of the State with economic activity; an aggressive foreign policy; weak and fractured but nonetheless significant foreign opponents; demographic issues; etc.

Question: When did we see this set of circumstances in the 20th Century? Are we seeing them happen under our noses now? What do they lead to?

God help us.

Yes, China fits the bill for all of the listed factors, but we don’t live in the 20th Century.

China has a big data and a machine intelligence economy supporting autocracy. Is cyber authoritarianism compatible with success? Do the listed factors matter? Is it going to be different this time?

Or does history repeat itself?
