My feeling is that mutual fund managers had to buy and hold last year, just to match the averages. However, this year, they probably figure a performance of 10% or so will be just fine, so my theory is that a lot of stocks are being sold for very modest gains. Ergo, it is my belief that many people who bought Intel at $50 a month ago started selling when it hit $60. I have been tempted to trade this way, except that none of the great investors ever seemed to do this; they buy for the long term. Eventually the short-term traders move on to another sector and reality pushes the stocks back to their proper level.
