Cannes: new films from Kaurismäki, Wenders and Erice. A stilted essay about the return of these filmmakers. mubi.com A Great Director Returns After 31 Years With a Grudge Against Cannes vulture.com Victor Erice is a Spanish filmmaker who made only 3 feature length movies - - the spirit of the beehive (RT 96) , for which he is most famous, el sur (RT 100) and dream of light( RT 90). After el sur, he explained in a criterion interview, he couldn’t find much work because the producer bad-mouthed him for going over budget. El sur was only the 1st ½ of the movie he wanted to make. 23 years later, he wrote, directed and narrated a 33 minute short film that i really enjoyed ( and used to be rated 100 on rotten tomatoes but now it has vanished from RT) , la morte rouge, which i believe, along with el sur, is his best work. I think i’ve watched it about 6 times. It can serve as an intro to Erice and explains why he became a director and why he specializes in working with kids and young adults.
