Not sure what to think about what caused the Maui fires.

Seems odd that the town of Lahaina existed for 150 to 200 years without such an event and all of a sudden this occurs - but that doesn't really mean anything.

The speed and extent to which the fire spread also seems unusual. My understanding is that it started late afternoon and within a couple hours the town was gone. I guess it is possible but given the earlier point seems odd.

Hard to believe Lahaina would be a 'target' but I am not at all familiar with the local politics and frictions.

Also become suspicious when the governor cries that 'climate change' is responsible - which he has - since that for sure is complete BS.

Most of the parking was a couple blocks in from the shore and tourists gravitated toward Front St. My first reaction would have been to get to the rental car and get out of dodge which would have had us walking into the flames since the fire line moved from inland to shore. People with similar thoughts likely got burnt to a toast.

Very grateful that I didn't plan the vacation a week or two later. My sweetie doesn't swim and it would have been a hard sell getting her to jump in the ocean. Though I am sure the intense heat (500 to 1000 F) from the looks of the toasted cars) would have been persuasive.

Had an odd experience a couple days before we left at a beach a few miles north of Lahaina. We were exploring different beaches and lucked upon a parking spot at the very front next to the reserved spots for the lifeguards - at an otherwise fully packed lot. We got out and my honey walked to the water and I stayed back and sat on a picnic table enjoying the beauty of the scene. A pretty normal looking middle aged couple came up to me with a laminated paper claiming to be on a 'treasure hunt' and were asking me various questions apparently thinking I was a plant as part of whatever activity they were up to. I assured them I was just visiting and not part of any activity but still was happy to engage and talk with them. Then, all of a sudden the guy claims to be Jesus and asks if it would be alright if he prayed for me. I told him go right ahead I'll take prayers from anyone. He starts up and goes on and on for 5 or 10 minutes with what seemed like a heart felt prayer. When he's through I tell him to let me pray for him. Give him and his companion a quick prayer, thank him, and we walked back to our car and leave. My sweetie thought for sure it was part of a scam but money or donations were never part of the conversation and I am still scratching my head about the experience.

Strange indeed ...any ideas what they were up too?
