Remember of course that voltage is a relative concept also known as "potential difference." I would say grounding has a more important effect of providing a free electron source than maintaining a particular level relative to true ground via a spike, but a lot more research probably needs to be done before it's conclusive. It's highly likely it has some effect which may or may not be significant.

When in doubt, I always revert to: "what would a caveman do?" I know he probably wouldn't stop at the 7-11 for a Hoagie washed down with a Slurpee while wearing Air Jordans and covering most of his body with the only exposed areas slathered in cancerous chemicals to block out the Sun.
