As some of you know, I've been on vacation for most of the summer and just returned. I've been posting my photo essays about it on the Art of Investing thread. But this being a dog thread, I thought to reflect on the doggie matters of the trip.

Happy to say that Italy is a no-kill state and dog put up for adoption will not be killed. A side effect of this (and it is a good thing) is that dog adoption process is pretty lengthy in Italy (average ~3 months). And as a result, I did not manage to adopt a truffle dog as I had planned to. No worries, a quick look on kijiji.ca tells me that there are plenty of unwanted 2 and 3 year old dogs up for adoption - wonder why that is :^(

Italy and Spain are also dog-friendlier countries than Canada and the US. Interestingly, I ran into a fair number of chocolate labs in Rome. Their owners explained to me that their dog was from Canada <g> I guess labs are not common enough there and need introduction.

In the Vatican, there is a "zoo" hall full of sculptures of animals. At the entrance, I saw these. They are 2000+ year old Greek dog statues that were given to the pope by one of the Medicis. I can't remember which pope got them, but I am pretty sure he was a Medici too.

These dogs look very interesting. I don't think they exist in the modern world. If someone knows them, I'd like to know.
