Winbond says U.S. tariff threat will be negligible

TAIPEI (AFX-ASIA) - Winbond Electronic Corp president Chang Chih-yuan has
said the negative impact of possible anti-dumping tariffs by the U.S. on
local SRAM chip makers will be negligible because the output of such chips
accounts for only a small portion of Taiwan's semiconductor sector.
Chang said less than three pct of the SRAM chips which Winbond made last
year were directly sold to the U.S.
The U.S. Department of Commerce on Friday accused SRAM chip producers in
Taiwan and South Korea of unfair trade practices.
The U.S. International Trade Commission is to hold a public hearing
Wednesday before making a final ruling at month-end. If it upholds dumping
complaints made by Micron Co in March last year, Winbond SRAM exports would
incur an extra 102.88 pct in punitive tariffs.
Domestic industry analysts said they originally feared Micron was
targeting DRAM chips. These account for more than 30 pct of Taiwan's
semiconductor output while SRAM chips make up 13 pct.
