The eastward expansion of NATO was because the countries that were under the thumb of the Soviet Union were afraid that Russia would try to force them back into a subordinate position again. Only to someone who has a strong authoritarian streak would deny an independent country that degree of self-determination. They basically had the choice of aligning with the EU and become more prosperous, or go back to the downward spiral of abject poverty the aligning with Russia would mean. Not to mention, the abusive security apparatus that Russian rule means.

Now it is true that Russia did not like the idea of those countries to have options. Russia is perfectly happy with a master/slave relationship they had. Despite the instability as shown by the fact that the USSR and Russia routinely invades their allies for the slightest transgression. And they are pretty brutal about it. So no wonder that those countries were desperate to join NATO. It was the only way to guarantee safety from an aggressive bully. Regardless, it isn't about NATO. It is about the EU.

And yes, the EU has been courting those old Warsaw Pact members. Despite all of the problems of the EU, it has resulted in the longest period of peace with its attendant prosperity that Europe has ever had. Until the Common Market was created and evolved into the EU, every few decades massive armies would engage in bloody conflicts in an area the size of a middling state. Destroying infrastructure, uprooting and killing civilians and laying waste to entire economies. It should be no surprise that the Europeans wanted off that particular merry-go-round. Especially in light of what WWI and WWI Redux had illustrated that modern war is very efficient at death and destruction. If Russia isn't happy that they can't run roughshod over their neighbors on a whim, well so be it. They don't get a vote.

That you seem to think they have a right to slaughter their neighbors on a whim is appalling. And makes you dangerous.
